Score One for Public Services

Residents from the City of Sheboygan came out in hoards to protest a proposal to eliminate the city's police force and replace it by contracting with the Sheboygan County Sheriff's Department.

And the city council listened, killing the resolution in a landslide 14-2 vote.

Often we hear in Wisconsin about angry taxpayers who are tired of living in a so-called "tax hell." It's nice to see a story that reminds us that as much as people may not like paying taxes, they sure do appreciate the excellent public services they get in return.

As Ald. Silas VanderWeele said about the vote: “If we're not careful with measures that we take to cut costs, we may unintentionally cause citizens to lose their pride in Sheboygan. Once we take away the pride that we all have in the city, there will be no reason to call Sheboygan home.”

The same is true for the rest of the state, as well.
